WHO WE ARE:
Solidarités Jeunesses is an organisation that works for non-formal education. It runs a number of small community centres in rural environments and organises short and long-term international workcamps, social integration projects, training programmes and actions for international solidarity.

VOLUNTARY SERVICE:
A voluntary service is an act of mutual exchange between a person or a group who offer time, work and energy to a general interest project in a host community who in return offer the volunteers an opportunity to learn, to experiment and to achieve personal and collective construction.
A workcamp for young international volunteers gathers together 10 to 15 people from different nationalities. Together you will organise your everyday life according to the local possibilities and to the goals set to achieve. The work is open to everyone and it doesn't require any specific skills or expertise. For the project to go go smoothly from the beginning to the end, the participants will need to be motivated and reliable. The time devoted to work is about 30 hours a week. During the workcamp we promote exchange, encounter and the achievement of a useful action which is part of a local project.

OUR PROJECT AND WORK:

The town of Montendre, where you can find the hosting centre and the base of the association, knows and works during the whole year together with Solidarités Jeunesses Poitou-Charentes. Montendre already welcomed several international workcamps.

Volunteers will have to respect hygiene standards for cleaning and cooking, and help with stock and financial managment. Volunteers also have to keep in mind that we host some group with young people with fewer opportunities and some international workcamp in hour centre. We offer participation in workshops with the groups, supervision of creative activities, maintenance of the garden as well as participation in several international projects on the site of La Maison des Bateleurs and the region Poitou-Charentes.

A little training will be provided upon arrival of the volunteers so they understand the procedures and logistics, but also so they understand the context of the association and its values.

THE TEAM :
There will be about 5 volunteers in the team and one or two coordinators who will organize with you the daily life. Your team will manage a budget for shopping, and everybody is going to prepare meal. Don’t forget to bring recipes from your country ! The common languages on the work-camp are frequently English and French.

LEISURE :
The team will organize their leisure with the volunteers of the association and the local population. In the Charente-Maritime is a nice environment and a historical and culinary heritage to discover. There is no car on our workcamps. You are going to do activities with the inhabitants of the village and you can coordinate the evenings together.

ACCOMODATION:
Community rooms will be at your disposal (sleeping, cooking, meals, washroom). It is situated on your working place.
Don’t forget your sleeping bag.

INSURANCES :
Solidarités Jeunesses insures you in civil responsibility and in accidents, but it’s up to you to have an insurance for illness. Citizens of the EU have to bring the European insurance card, and others are obliged to have their own insurance for illness. Think about being on time with vaccinations.

THE ORGANIZATION:
SOLIDARITES JEUNESSES is a voluntary service organization, the French branch of the international movement Youth Action for Peace (YAP). Founded in 1923, after the first World War, by French and German protestants. YAP was from its origins a movement of secular people who were convinced of the necessity to go beyond the national, sectarian and cultural borders to work for peace. Thanks to a network of local associations, Solidarités Jeunesses developed an action towards and with young people. Workcamps are places for multicultural and inter-generational exchanges and active solidarity.

Member of the movement SOLIDARITES JEUNESSES, Solidarités Jeunesses Poitou-Charentes organizes about fifteen international workcamps in the region during the summer season along with other international and local development activities during the whole year. The “Maison des Bateleurs” is a hosting centre that co-ordinates the workcamps and it has been working in the village of Montendre for 14 years.

Mais qui sont-ils ?
Voilà treize années maintenant que l’association Solidarités Jeunesses s’est installée dans l’ancienne maison Bonnet, route de Onda, qu’ils ont entièrement rénovée et rebaptisée « Maison des Bateleurs ». Dix années de chantiers, mais aussi de partenariat étroit avec le monde associatif, d’insertion dans la vie locale, et pourtant, nombreux sont encore les Montendrais qui s’interrogent à leur sujet, les confondant même parfois avec les Baladins…
Lorsque Solidarités Jeunesses a lancé ses premiers chantiers de rénovation en Haute Saintonge, ses responsables, Louisa Crispe et Louis Leroux, avaient trouvé en la municipalité montendraise un interlocuteur de choix. Les deux jumelages, la semaine européenne témoignaient déjà de la sensibilité de l’équipe aux échanges internationaux. Depuis des années, la Maison Bonnet était inoccupée et aucun projet de qualité n’avait encore émergé pour lui donner une seconde vie.
L’idée d’accueillir en ce lieu l’une des 7 délégations régionales de Solidarités Jeunesses a enthousiasmé le conseil municipal et il a été convenu que l’association se chargerait des principaux travaux de rénovation, la commune prenant en charge les matériaux et l’intervention des entreprises spécialisées.
En quelques années, SJ y a réalisé un travail colossal : aujourd’hui, la maison, refaite à neuf, et mise aux normes est très confortable et parfaitement équipée pour accueillir des groupes de 20 personnes. Une seconde vie.

Pour quoi faire ?
Le principe des chantiers internationaux est désormais mieux connu : à la demande d’une commune, un groupe de jeunes volontaires venus du monde entier vient travailler pendant trois semaines sur place. Le « chantier » peut prendre diverses formes. Le plus souvent, il s’agit de la rénovation du petit patrimoine (lavoir, muret, fontaine… ), l’aménagement de sentiers découvertes, la mise en valeur de l’environnement, mais peut aussi prendre la forme d’une animation, un projet culturel (à Vanzac, en 2002, les jeunes avaient réalisé une expo photo de tous les habitants du village).
En échange, la commune s’engage à fournir le matériel et les matériaux nécessaires, à mettre à disposition un référent technique (employé communal, maçon retraité, etc.), à héberger les jeunes et à informer et sensibiliser la population à ce projet (lien avec les associations, découverte de la région, activités de loisirs…).
Généralement, l’équipe travaille le matin et l’après-midi, elle participe à la vie locale, l’objectif étant de multiplier les occasions de rencontrer la population et d’échanger avec elle.
Depuis une dizaine d’années, nos trois communes associés ont à de nombreuses reprises partagé ces moments avec des jeunes venus de tous pays : outre les récents chantiers au château (qui se poursuivent en 2008), on peut citer la rénovation très réussie de l’église St Babylas ou l’enceinte du cimetière à Vallet, la fontaine de l’Essert à Chardes, l’aménagement du site du dolmen au château, etc.

Un engagement local réel
Chaque chantier est encadré par un jeune volontaire « long séjour », accueilli pendant plusieurs mois à la Maison des Bateleurs. Il va ainsi progresser si nécessaire dans notre langue, bénéficier d’un apprentissage technique et se former aux missions d’animateur pédagogique. L’été venu, il sera prêt à gérer le bon déroulement d’un chantier.
Outre cette fonction de formation, les permanents de l’association coordonnent l’ensemble des chantiers sur le territoire et rencontrent les élus, mais ils participent aussi à la vie locale. Evénements inter associatifs (Fête de la musique, Téléthon, Festival de la terre, Semaine Européenne, etc.) mais également en collaboration pédagogique avec le centre de Loisirs et le LAM auprès des enfants : ateliers périscolaires (marionnettes, percussions, environnement, …).

L’engagement de la Maison des Bateleurs ne se résume donc pas à l’organisation de chantiers sur le territoire de la Haute Saintonge : les Bateleurs participent activement à la vie locale, et mieux, ils ouvrent leurs portes à qui veut bien venir les rencontrer, visiter la maison, partager un repas.

Un chantier international, des rencontres : - Réaliser des travaux concrets afin de mettre en valeur le patrimoine local,- Sensibiliser la population à son patrimoine,- Donner aux habitants la possibilité de partager des moments de travail, de découverte, de détente avec des personnes de tous horizons,- Faire de la présence des volontaires internationaux un moment fort d’animation locale, interculturelle et intergénérationnelles qui pourra perdurer après leur départ,- Offrir une expérience originale et formatrice à tous les participants étrangers ou locaux : œuvrer ensemble à un projet d’utilité collective.
